Events around the country

It’s more usual for the provinces to complain about the lack of events that carry CPD points. But during May/June, Hawke’s Bay/Gisborne has had a number of events to pick and choose from, reports Yvonne Forrest - and this continues into the coming months, both there and in the Waikato.

"In the Bay, most of this activity has been a result of the Hawke’s Bay Museum and Art Gallery and Creative Hawke’s Bay, who have been putting on lectures and talks with an architectural theme, held in the Century Theatre at the Museum.

"It started with Guy Marriage and his lecture on 'The Buildings Louis Hay Didn’t Build'. While we all know of Louis Hay’s built work, Guy’s lecture focused on his un-built work - specifically his proposed entertainment centre for the Marine Parade in Napier and his entry for the competition for the Municipal Theatre in Napier.

"Next up was Ath, presenting his lecture on 'Exploring Architecture and its Context'. This was a look at the way Athfield Architects has continued to explore the physical forms of buildings and how they respond and sit within the New Zealand context. This was accompanied by various examples of his work throughout the years, including the proposal for Manila in the Philippines.

"Quickly following on the heels of this was Josephine Hughes' 'Postcards from Attingham'. Josephine was the lucky recipient of an Attingham scholarship, which entailed visiting various stately homes in England. She presented 13 of these in her lecture and accompanied her many photos with a run down on each building’s history.

“We’ve also been lucky enough to be one for the first branches to be part of the President’s Tour. Not only did he talk about the state of the nation, but he gave us a run down on his experience competing in the international competition for the International Criminal Court at The Hague in the Netherlands.

“And lastly we have had the pleasure of listening to Perry Royal from Royal Architects, Christchurch, who presented a selection of their projects to us. Most of these were won via competitions, and were for various universities.

“So it really has been a feast in terms of CPD points for us, and it’s not over yet! The Laminex Group are bringing Murali Bhaskar over to give us a lecture on 'Light in the Context of Architecture' to kick off July with. Plus up and coming at the HBMAG is a talk by the architectural model maker Joel Taylor and 'The External Sunshine of the Spotless City Redux' lecture by Douglass Lloyd Jenkins.

“And later in the year we will be holding our annual Heritage Bus Tour. Obviously this is open to all branches so look out for more information later in the year on the CPD website,” says Yvonne.

Meantime, coming up in the Waikato/ BOP on 24 and 25 July are site tours (of private homes and commercial buildings by Architecture Workshop, Cook Sargisson Pirie, Darryl Church, APR, Elliot Architect, Mary Campbell, Gerald Stock, and others) in and around Rotorua, including houses on Lakes Tarawera and Rotoiti,  followed by a dinner at The Blue Baths in Rotorua. There guest speakers will be James Fenton (of Architecture Workshop) and Bryan Windeatt (of McKinney + Windeatt Architects). The following day, the site tour continues (from 10 am to 1 pm). If you are interested in attending, more details are on the CPD site or contact Evan Mayo for more information.

Above is James Fenton's 'whare in a kumara garden', which is part of the tour.
